Work and sport

For Margaret work and sport were closely entwined at Cadburys where she really enjoyed life and where she remained until she got married and moved to Bedfordshire. While at Cadburys she built up many friendships and through the facilities at the company she developed her love for sport in which she was to reach a high level. Her first loves were tennis and table tennis. She played tennis for the Cadbury team whilst in table tennis she went on to play in the Birmingham First Division where she came up against Ann Haydn-Jones (who, for those not old enough to remember, went on to win Wimbledon). She also loved squash, hockey and netball. She attended many coaching courses at Lilleshall Hall and became a formidable opponent since as well as being very gifted in ball games she was also very competitive – none of the English 'shall we just play for pleasure, no need to score'. Margaret played to win every time. After getting married she had two brief jobs in Luton before starting a family. She did not return to work until the children were in their teens, going to work at the Local Government Management Board for a few days and ending up staying for several years until retiring when the Board moved to London. While there she enthusiastically embraced the new experience of computers in the workplace. Her logical mind and meticulous attention to detail made her a great asset to the office, constantly helping her colleagues with the computer systems albeit with the occasional quiet call to David for advice. While her family were growing up, sport began to take a back seat. However, there was nothing she liked more in later years than to be offered a game of table tennis by men who, not knowing her background, clearly regarded this female as a walkover. Some of them were to get a nasty and embarrassing shock when she got into her stride ! David had long since given up playing tennis and table tennis against her after the constant humiliation of losing.
